OBSERVATIONS Arrived at her future home, the bride’s sedan chair is unsealed and she is carried into the house on the back of a senior woman who has proved to be fertile and fortunate in her marriage. The matchmaker’s presence can be seen from the red umbrella with which she shields the bride from heaven as she is carried in. As with all ceremonies, whether happy or sad, there is considerable noise and hubbub, and the narrow alleyway between the terraces is jammed with onlookers.
