OBSERVATIONS Following the adults, student representatives now take their turn. They offer flowers, bow rather than kowtow, and do not offer wine, but one of them also reads an address to the ancestor. On the left of the photograph, the school band is playing, conducted by the teacher in the white trousers, but it is not the music which is causing the two children in the foreground to cover their ears - behind the camera a long string of very noisy firecrackers is going off. The explosions set fire to the hillside, and proceedings were stopped for a while until the fire was extinguished.
