Western Pop Music

The cultural waves from the West flew across the ocean, landed on the shores of Hong Kong, via the radio. Thanks to progressive radio show hosts such as Aileen Woods and Uncle Ray, Wong Jum-sum and his generation of youth learnt to open their ears to the plural world of Western pop. They learnt to embrace Elvis Presley and Benny Goodman, rock and jazz, folk and Latin at one go. While doing that, they knew more than ever that in variety, styles and substance, Western pop stood head and shoulders above Mandarin as well Cantonese pop.
