Western Films

Like most folks in Sham Shui Po, Wong Jum-sum actually preferred Western films to all others. Western films had a rich history, were often well produced, involving the work of talented casts. However western films did not thrive on money and scale alone. Many of the Western films Wong saw broke new grounds in form and content, provoking intellectual awe and sensual amazement among the audience. In these respects, none of the local productions, be they in Cantonese, Mandarin, or in the dialect of Amoy or Chaozhou, could compare.
