Without the “big-hearted” Tai Wan Hill, Hung Hom would not have developed into such a large residential district as we see today. A peninsular in the past, Hung Hom was known as Tai Wan (lit. “Big Bay”) and received a nickname in similar sound, Tai Wan (lit. “Big Ring”). Tai Wan Hill (aka Tai Wan Shan) was a rocky hill at the coast, with a wide expanse that covered the area north of Tak On Street, that is, Whampoa Garden, Whampoa Estate, Hutchison Park, Hung Hom Road, Tai Wan Road, Dyer Avenue and Hung Hom Estate. Down below the hill was a beach facing today’s Hung Hom Bay. The older generation must have remembered how beautiful the clear sandy beach was, since Tai Wan Beach had been a holiday hotspot for both families and lovers in those days.
