Ng Chi Wing
From growing up to becoming the village head
Ng Chi Wing was not interested in talking about his Village Headman’s work. He showed passion and longing when he recalled the long-gone rural landscapes and childhood memories.

Born in Hong Kong in 1947, Ng Chi Wing is the 26th generation of the Ng Clan from Nga Tsin Wai Village. His father, Ng Yau Fat, was the Village Representative. The eldest of his eight siblings, Ng Chi Wing was born in a poor polygamist family with many children. Ng Chi Wing spent much of his childhood in the walled village, making many friendships that would last his entire life. He dropped out of school after completing Primary 6 to support his family, initially taking casual work as a machinery apprentice and seaman. In the early 1970s, Ng Chi Wing joined the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD). Not long after, he was allocated with staff quarters and moved out of Nga Tsin Wai. Ng Chi Wing was elected as the Deputy Village Headman in 1989 by the villagers and became its Village Headman in 2006. At this time, he invited trusted childhood friends to help him manage the village’s affairs. Ng Chi Wing also belongs to Ng Clan’s second branch of the Ng Tung Un Tso line for which he also served as the Manager in 2006. A village for Ng Chi Wing means a large polygamous family, green lush fields and happy youthful summers running wild in the hills with close buddies. It’s about everlasting friendships and simple people who got along very well with one and other. The emergence of the resettlement estate in the early 1960s, the Government’s land policies in the 1970s, and property developers’ acquisitions after the 1980s all tarnished these simple pleasures forever. However, as a native of this place where he was born and raised up, Ng Chi Wing was delighted to serve his fellow villagers even after he had moved away for many years.
