OBSERVATIONS At Ching Ming, a festival held by the solar calendar in early April, families visit the graves of their dead ancestors, clean away intrusive growth, scatter lime to discourage further invasion, and worship the soul of the buried ancestor. Here a small family group is tending the grave of a man who had died twelve years earlier. The young man (rear centre) is renewing the gravestone inscription with red paint. Some families hold a simple picnic beside the grave, living and dead eating together as they had done before the death.
