Execution show, gambling and opium smoking were perhaps exciting, but not exciting enough for foreigners in the past. They had more unusual adventures to take, and among them was a game widely popular in Europe and America at that time — pistol duel. True, pistol duel, the kind that we see so much in Western movies, where two opponents turn to face each other and shoot!

The game, in those days, ran like this: with the presence of a judge, the two parties would walk 25 paces, back to back, and then turned to the opponent to shoot. Alternatively, the two parties would face each other and shoot by turns, until either one was struck. Death or injury, no one should complain. Any offense, which most of the time had to do with the vices in the Walled City, was cleared out after the duel.

The parade ground was a courtyard used for training and execution. It was located at today’s South Wall Road. Checa and Bueno had their duel there.
