香港長期是英國的殖民地,經濟上對外開放,文化上對歐西特別寬容,西洋時尚,早在上世紀二三十年代,已經由中環一帶,向外散播。

1950年代,西洋潮流進一步滲入平民生活。

新一代的潮,由電影帶動。日戰前洋電影在本地放映的數字每年平均超過二百部。黃湛森抵港後,數字有增無減。慢慢,讀番書,看洋戲,玩舶來的呼拉圈和搖搖,在年輕人之中,變得理所當然。

新一代的潮,也由電台帶動。多謝前衛主持人Aileen Woods和Uncle Ray的忘情推介,黃湛森和同輩的年青人,天天靠近電台,面向歐西,貼近流行,學懂將Frank Sinatra、Bing Crosby、Elvis Presley與Benny Goodman一起兼聽,並且在搖頭擺腦之間,確認歐西流行曲在創作、演奏、歌唱、錄音,都不是香港或上海所能望其肩背。

電台廣播歐西流行歌曲,由聽覺開始,經過身軀,製造了新一代的口味和人格。
