Village Life-Banyan Tree

A lone pedlar sits hopefully under the large banyan tree.

Place:Sheung Shui
Date:1963-12-18
Observation:The tree was located between the gate of the walled village and the Village Council House. Twice a day a few traders would come here to sell fresh fish, meat and vegetables to the villagers, but already in 1965 the greater variety of produce on offer in nearby Shek Wu Hui was stealing the trade of the pedlars, and the introduction of refrigerators (and the electric power to run them) was about to make twice daily shopping unnecessary.
