Rice bin

Rice bin

Place:Sheung Shui Bou Sheung Tsuen
Date:1965-02-02
Observation:The old oil drum in my neighbour’s house serves as a rice bin, and at new year he has pasted a charm on it to ensure that it remains “Full”. The lower red paper charm reads “Resound”, and is pasted on the pestle end of the rice pounder beam used for making rice flour. The rhythmic thud of the pounder as it crushed glutinous rice grains into flour to make seasonal delicacies was one of the most exciting sounds in the run-up to new year.
